Check In

Hey everyone, I apologize for the lack of entries on here. Ive been consumed with so many other things in my life. I always tend to get super excited about something and bite off a little more than I can chew. Besides being a mom, I’ve got a few books that I have started reading, an online class to complete, and trying to mix in workouts and meal plans among many more day to day obligations. I’ve also been struggling with my own motivation. When you are a stay at home mom and don’t really have to do anything, its hard to get yourself going. Even if it is taking me a little longer than some women losing the baby weight, I am still pleased with the progress I have made since having my baby.

Any who, the internet can be pretty confusing when you are trying to find out how to eat healthy. There are so many different diets that I have been looking at and trying to find something that I would like and can fit into my lifestyle. I think what I have decided to do is just eat real unprocessed foods and limit my sugar intake. I can’t seem to keep myself away from carbohydrates like the Paleo and Ketogenic diets require. I tried for a couple weeks to eat like that but, for right now I haven’t been able to maintain it. I have been using My Fitness Pal app to log my food so that I can keep track of my macros (macronutrients; carbs, protein, fats) from time to time. I don’t log it everyday but trying to get in the habit of doing it. Usually I eat the same thing throughout the day so i know what it is going to end up. I start out my day with coffee. As much as I wish I could just drink my coffee black, I can’t get myself to do it. I’ve been going back and forth with myself on what is better for me to use as a creamer and/or sweetener. I had been using two splenda (yes, I like my coffee sweet) and about 2 tablespoons of half and half, but I just got International Delight sugar free french vanilla coffee creamer and I do not add any other sweetener with that. I suppose I just get whatever is on sale. I don’t really like to eat when I first wake up, I end up making my breakfast between 10-11 AM which consists of two large eggs cooked in coconut oil. Sometimes I make a slice of toast with that but it really depends and I don’t do it too often. Lunch I make a smoothie, which is a chocolate protein shake made with two cups ice, one cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk, and a banana. Trust me, it is bomb . com! I had been using Herbalife for my shake but I ran out and don’t plan on buying more. The more and more I have been going in this journey, I have been staying away from anything processed. I recently found a protein that really prides themselves on a pure product without any additives. Naked Protein is what I will be buying. My dinner varies from day to day, as its pretty much the only thing that changes, although it is always a veggie and either turkey or chicken for my protein.

So other than my eating habits and everything else I just ranted about, I have been in a funk lately and trying to kick it. I haven’t been able to get out of the house enough, and haven’t been too active throughout the day. I paid for personal training sessions, I just haven’t started them yet because the trainer and I haven’t set up a schedule. I’m hoping once that starts I get motivated again.

Skinny Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins

I seriously cannot get enough of these dark chocolate chip banana muffins! I had never cared to bake before but these are so simple and they come out so well every time I make them. Plus the fact that they are pretty good for you makes it even better.

Ingredients:

3 ripe bananas

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

1 tbsp baking soda

1/4 tsp salt

1 tbsp almond milk- I use vanilla

1/4 cup honey

1/2 cup dark chocolate chips

1 tbsp vanilla

1 tbsp olive oil

1 egg

1/2 cup nonfat plain greek yogurt

First pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees and spray a muffin tray with non-stick spray. Set the tray aside until the batter is ready to be added.

Add the bananas, yogurt, egg, honey, vanilla, oil, and milk to a blender and blend until it is a smooth and creamy consistency.

In a large mixing bowl add your flour, baking soda, and salt and mix together. Then add your wet ingredients from the blender into the dry ingredients in the large mixing bowl. Once you have that all mixed together go ahead and fold in your chocolate chips. Never hurts to add a few extra chocolate chips if you’d like! 😉

Add your completed muffin batter to the muffin tray and place in the center of the oven for 23-25 minutes. The old toothpick in the middle of the muffin will do the trick to see if they are done.

I originally found this recipe from Pinterest. You can click HERE to see the original post from the lady who posted it. I don’t want to take credit of her recipe. I just wanted to share it because I love it so much!

If anyone ends up making these please let me know how you like them!

Keepin’ It Real

Theres a few people that have been following me on the start of my fitness journey and I really appreciate the support that I have gotten. It really means a lot to me that, in the fitness community, there is so much acceptance and empowerment. I’ve been taking it one day at a time and trying to do the best that I can every day. I’m not working with any weight loss products, just eating good food and watching what I am eating and how much. However, I have started doing workouts with Beachbody On Demand. I find that their workouts are very effective and easy for me to incorporate into my daily routine. These workout videos are anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes and I’m always dripping in sweat when I’m done with it. Again, I’m not selling or promoting anything. I am just letting you know what I am doing and what has worked for me. Especially since I don’t have the ability to go to a gym and use the equipment they have, I needed to find something that I enjoy doing at home that is also going to challenge me.

Its been a little over a month since my last post and I’m happy to say that I have had some progress. My clothes are fitting a bit better and overall I feel awesome. I didn’t post measurements in the first blog but I have started taking my measurements. As of this morning my weight is 153.8 which is down 22 pounds since November of 2016. I checked just now and the BMI calculator says 28.1 and that is down from last month of 28.7. Also when I measured myself this morning I am down 4 inches total. It’s not a tremendous weight loss but for me progress in progress and I’ll take it. For me this is a lifelong journey and I don’t expect miracles to happen over night.

I have been pretty active on my Instagram account with posting daily of random thoughts and workouts. There’s a link to my Instagram on the bottom of this page, feel free to follow me there for inspiration and motivation. Oh and if you’re like me and don’t really have the ability to go to a gym I would recommend looking into Beachbody On Demand. I’m really excited about this next month and the progress I’ll see so keep an eye out for the next Keepin’ It Real post.

Plan ahead, buy healthy

Like I have mentioned before, the eating portion of weight loss is much harder to follow through with than working out is. To get up and moving is fairly simple, go take a walk or even go to the gym. The struggle is really understanding how to fuel our bodies properly. Just because you went and worked out doesn’t mean you can go reward yourself with any food you’d like for that day. Even if you didn’t workout, choosing to eat a salad once isn’t going to make you loose weight.

Some of you might also be thinking that you just don’t like anything that is healthy. Sorry to tell you, but if you eat like shit you are going to feel like shit. Eating food that is good for you might take some time. If you don’t like vegetables,  try fluffing it up a but to where you can eat it. Use some salt and pepper, cheese, or even some hot sauce to add some flavor. There are so many ways to make veggies taste better, just go look on Pinterest! 🙂 Now I don’t recommend too much salt or cheese in meals but if you really hate veggies and are trying to mask it to eat them, then go ahead and try it to see if you like it. I personally really love veggies in their natural glory and don’t need to add anything to them to enjoy them. After changing some of the ways you eat, you might find yourself liking different foods more and won’t need to add anything to your food to like it.

To really set yourself up for success, try planning out your meals weekly. This is a great way to monitor what you eat, prevent yourself from spontaneous food purchases, and even save some time throughout the week. Even though I am home all day, it is just as easy for me to eat like crap so I plan out my meals. For this week I am eating a lot of brown rice with different veggies and protein for my meals. I also got various fruits and veggies to snack on. I’ll do another blog on how I prepare my meals so that I can go into more detail.

I am focusing on WHAT I am putting into my body. This picture is some of what I just purchased to give a better idea. As you can see I only purchase fresh veggies and fruit. Depending on pricing the only alternative to fresh produce that I will purchase is frozen. DO NOT BUY CANNED FRUIT AND VEGETABLES! The amount of crap they put in the cans to preserve them for shelf life is not anything you want in your body. Go take a look in your food pantry and fridge and read some of the labels, can you even pronounce some of the ingredients in your food?

Another staple for my household is ground Turkey. A lot of recipes call for ground beef, try switching all your normal recipes from ground beef to turkey. Also, most of the time when I grocery shop the ground turkey is cheaper than the beef. I promise that you won’t even notice the difference and turkey is so much better for you!

A common misconception about food is that carbs are bad. Carbohydrates are not all bad, there is such a thing called good carbs. A standard rule of thumb that I go by is that I only buy 100% whole wheat products, I know I don’t want to eat bleached food. You’d be surprised how many great whole wheat products are available. This Nature’s own bread has all natural ingredients plus the extra protein, so why not?! Now I’m not really one to put jelly or anything on my toast, but my son LOVES it! So after standing in the jelly isle for a good 10 minutes, I decided to go with this Welch’s Natural Strawberry Spread. As you can see from the last picture the ingredients are simple and I actually know what they are, so for me this was a clear choice.

If you take anything away from this, I would hope that you are a little more careful of what you are purchasing at the store for you and your family.

Keep a lookout for my next blog on how I meal prep! I might just do a video for that one to give everyone a better insight.

Keepin’ It Real

I decided to start a blog series to show my start and progress throughout this new journey of mine. I want to show you all that I am just as human as all of you. So each month I’ll be posting my current weight, BMI (body mass index), and current pictures to keep myself accountable.

After a while my hope is that I will be a certified health coach with the knowledge and tools to help others. This is something that I am very passionate about and many people don’t have the money or support system to maintain a healthy lifestyle, so I’d like to be able to be that middle ground. Weather you need help with going to the gym and knowing what to do or if you need someone to go grocery shopping with you and create a meal plan that works or even just someone to talk to, I’d like to be there.

Alright, lets do this..

My current weight is 157 with a BMI (body mass index) of 28.7. I got the BMI number from the BMI calculator on the US National Institute of Health, click HERE to find out yours. Believe it or not, I actually never really knew how tall I was until last night when my husband measured me! I have always told people that I am 5ft 2in. I wasn’t too far off, I am 5ft 1 3/4in. My husband said that according to army standards, I would just be 5ft 2in 😉

My goals are pretty simple; get to a healthy weight and maintain it. I’m sure as I evolve in this process my goals might change, but for now I’ll take it one step at a time. Also instead of always talking about myself, if someone would like to be featured on my blog, I’d be happy to post your progress and pictures too!

One of the things that bothers me most about my body is that after having two amazing boys, my stomach will never be flat again. Diastasis Recti is what it is called, and basically the two muscles in the abdomen split apart. In my case it isn’t something that can be fixed with diet and exercise. One day I’ll have to decide if it bothers me enough to have a surgery done. There’s a great blog I found that really goes into detail on what this is and how to fix it from Wellness Mama. For now, I don’t mind rocking the mom bod.

Come back next month to see an updated weigh in and new pictures. Have a great day and get out and do something!

My reason for this blog

I decided to start a blog to share my journey and I hope to inspire others along the way. I come from a family that has no grasp on a healthy lifestyle. I have struggled with my body image as far back as I can remember and I had always wanted to be skinny.  I no longer want to be skinny, I want to be healthy! So through my various struggles and victories, I want to connect with people in similar situations and help people discover what a healthy lifestyle really is. I am not where I want to be but I am growing and evolving everyday. I have started this journey with realizing that I know absolutely nothing about food and how our bodies process it. I have started researching the very basics about our bodies and how we process foods and what certain foods do to our bodies so that I can understand what is truly good to eat.

Being healthy involves many areas; nutrition, fitness and self-love. Between the three, food and nutrition and loving yourself are by far the hardest aspects. However it is important to be aware of all three concepts to truly be happy and healthy. I am not here to sell anything and I am not a doctor, I just want to be able to share my opinions and experiences and positively influence others. 🙂img_1923
